Lockport's wrestling team left Assembly Hall Saturday night with a sour taste in their mouths. Despite coming in with six state qualifiers, only three left with medals, and none with a coveted bracketboard. It was a bittersweet weekend, as none of the wrestlers were happy with their overall performance, but at the same time, half of our athletes competing in the tournament placed in one of the hardest state tournaments in the country.

It says a lot for a program and its expectations when a team "only" qualifies six of its starters for the state tournament, but that's exactly the position that Lockport found itself in by the end of the day Saturday. Of the eleven wrestlers who qualified for Friday and Saturday's sectional tournament, six wrestlers solidified a top-four finish, with two others falling one win shy of placing. Shayne Oster and Trevell Timmons both came away with sectional championships, while Abdullah Assaf and Ronald Tucker came up just shy, finishing in second. Brandon Ramos and Baylor Fernandes rounded out the qualifiers, each finishing in third place.

Only representing 12 out of 14 weights. Only 6 of those 12 wrestlers are considered the "starters." For most teams, that would be a disastrous lineup to enter into a tough conference tournament, but thanks to the depth and skill level of our backup wrestlers, Lockport was still able to take 4th place at the SWSC conference tournament this weekend. Led by a championship from Trevell Timmons at 152, the Porters finished with 143 team points, 25 points behind third place Lincoln-Way East.
