Summary
Wednesday night marked the first night of competition of the 2015-16 season for the Lockport Porters wrestling team. Head coach Josh Oster’s squad, ranked 6th in the state to start the season, won eleven of fourteen bouts to roll to the 46-12 victory over West Aurora.
The dual began at 106 pounds, where freshman Anthony Molton started the Porters off on the right path, picking up a fall in 3:55 over Brad Baldwin. Fellow freshman Matt Kronsbein followed with an 11-1 major decision over Brad Ramos to extend Lockport’s lead to 10-0. Garret Golob, the third of five freshman to start for the Porters, controlled West Aurora’s Marquis Nelson at 120 pounds en route to an 8-6 decision that put Lockport ahead 13-0.
West Aurora was able to get on the board at 126 pounds in arguably the best match of the night, when returning sectional-qualifier Brendan Ramsey lost a narrow decision to two-time state qualifier and last year’s 5th place finisher at 113 pounds, Isaac Jacquez. The match was close throughout, but Jacquez, ranked 4th at 120 to start the season, scored a takedown in the last 5 seconds of the third period to secure the 5-2 victory and put 3 points on the board for West Aurora.
The Porters responded swiftly and severely, winning seven consecutive matches to take an insurmountable lead. At 132, junior Brandon Ramos, a two-time 2A state qualifier who transferred from St. Laurence this summer, picked up his first win in a Lockport singlet. Ramos, ranked #5 at 120 to start the season, secured a 10-7 victory over Alex Roland to make the team score 16-3 in favor of Lockport.
At 138, freshman Baylor Fernandes scored a commanding 9-1 major decision in his high-school debut. Fernandes, an IKWF state champion last season, was followed by three-time state qualifier, defending state champion, and 2nd ranked senior Shayne Oster, who gained a quick 1:02 second fall to extend the team score to 26-3.
At 152, sophomore Zach Reese was able to outlast a comeback effort from Erik Olson to pick up a 5-4 decision, while junor Chandler Proszek managed to score a fall in 1:47 over Nick Spagnola at 160 pounds. At 170 pounds, Junior Nick Dado picked up a strong 9-3 decision for his first-career varsity win. Returning varsity wrestler Yousif Salah majored Steven Norman 8-0 at 182 pounds, giving Lockport a 42-3 lead.
The Porters dropped the next two matches to West Aurora. Sophomore Austin Atwood, wrestling up a weight class in his varsity debut, lost by fall to Tyler Zimmerman in 5:24, making the team score 42-9. Dan Stojsavljevic, a junior, came up just short at 220, dropping a 3-1 decision to Josh Mayhew.
At 285, the final of the five freshman making their varsity debuts for Lockport, Ron Tucker was able to close out the night with a impressive 9-0 major decision over Darien Glemza, making the final score Lockport 46, West Aurora 12.
Perhaps even more noteworthy than the wrestling on display was the charity of the fans attending the event. This dual was also organized as a fundraiser for JDRF. Through t-shirt sales, admissions, raffle tickets, and a likely-rigged vote for “Best Dressed Coach” competition, the meet was able to raise well over $1000 in donations for JDRF. Thank you to all those who donated their time, money, and effort in making this happen! We’re quite proud of the generosity on display by everyone in attendance.
Lockport’s Varsity wrestlers next compete this Saturday, at home at East Campus, in a quad versus Minooka, Belleville East, and InterMat’s #36 nationally ranked Mt. Carmel squad. Wrestling begins at 9 a.m. and will likely be live-tweeted as well on @LTHSwrestling. If you aren’t following us on Twitter and Facebook, you should be!
