Summary
The 3A #6 ranked Lockport wrestling team had a 2-1 showing at their home Lockport Duals today to bring their season record to 3-1. The Porters picked up a 52-27 win over Belleville West and a 65-4 win over Minooka before falling 41-24 to Mt. Carmel, the #2 ranked team in 2A and #36 in InterMat’s national team rankings.
Shayne Oster, Abdulah Assaf, Baylor Fernandes, and Ron Tucker, who all posted 3-0 records on the day, led the Porters. Anthony Molton, Chandler Proszek, Nick Dado, Austin Atwood, and Yousif Salah each had two wins as well in a day where 19 different wrestlers had varsity matches for Lockport.
Lockport started the day against Belleville West. In a dual where 12 of 14 matches ended in a fall or injury default, the Porters were able to tally nine pins and pull ahead for the victory. The dual also marked this season’s varsity debuts for Jake Cook at 113, Tyler Krestel at 132, and Chase Peters at 152, and last years 3rd place finisher at 113 pounds, Abdullah Assaf.
In their second dual against Minooka, the Porters dropped the opening match at 220 by a major decision in David Balderrama’s varsity debut, but the team responded by rolling off 13 consecutive wins to dominate the Indians, 65-4. Lockport was able to score bonus points in 10 of their 13 wins, including seven victories by fall.
In the marquee dual of the day against Mount Carmel, Lockport stormed out to an early lead, but it wasn’t enough to stave off the Caravan, who managed to score bonus points in 7 of their 8 victories. The dual began in Lockport’s favor with a forfeit at 285 for Ron Tucker and a 12-6 decision for Molton at 106. Kronsbein lost a close decision to returning state-qualifier Joe Egan at 113, but Assaf bounced back for the Porters at 120 with a dominating major decision over last years 5th place finisher at 113, Kaleb Guzior. Yahya Thomas responded for Mt. Carmel in kind, defeating Lockport’s Brendan Ramsey 14-3. In three matches this season, Ramsey has already squared off against two top-five wrestlers and one honorable mention. At 132, Brandon Ramos came out in what was arguably the most exciting match of the day, gaining an 8-point lead by the end of the first period, and holding off a strong comeback effort from Mt. Carmel’s Kendall Coleman to win 14-12. The dual’s most competitive match followed this high scoring affair, where Lockport freshman Baylor Fernandes was able to scramble his way to a 4-2 victory in overtime over Jack Mulay. Shayne Oster then continued his dominance thus far this season with a 20-5 technical fall at 145 to give Lockport a 24-7 lead. Unfortunately for Lockport, it was the last victory the Porters would have on the day, losing the remaining six matches of the dual. In the remaining matches, Mt. Carmel had four wrestlers ranked 4th or better and were able to secure five pins – the lone exception being a 14-3 major decision at 195 pounds. The dual ended with a final score of 41-24, in Mount Carmel’s favor.
