Introduction

This past weekend, six current Lockport wrestlers and one alumni travelled to Akron, Ohio, to compete in the United World Wrestling Cadet and University Nationals. Three of these seven wrestlers managed to place in the top eight at their weight classes, garnering themselves All-American status.

This event is unique as compared to our usual tournaments for a few reasons.  First, as a UWW World Team qualifier, this tournament used international weight classes, rather than the standard weights used in domestic competitions.  It also used UWW age groups, rather than the USAW age groups we're more familiar with.  UWW Cadets are born between 1999-2001.  The University age group is more complex but more open, requiring that the athlete be between 17-28 years old as of January 1, 2016, graduated from high school in 2015 or earlier, and is currently working towards a university degree or has received one in the past calendar year.  (I believe we would have had several more alumni in competition at the University level, but we have several alumni dealing with and working through serious injuries)

Anyone winning their weight class, including a best-of-three finals series, would be named to the U.S. World Team and entered into their respective UWW World Championships - Cadets in Tbilisi, Georgia, from September 13-18, 2016 and Universities in Çorum, Turkey, from October 23-30, 2016.

RECAP

Out of the six Cadets that made the trip, we ended up with an even split - three wrestlers obtained All-American status by placing in the top eight at their weight class, while three others fell short.  Ronald Tucker (125kg/275lbs) had our highest placing, going 2-2 to take 5th place.  Trevell Timmons (69kg/152lbs) won his first four matches of the day, putting him into the semifinals against David Carr.  Timmons held an early 5-point lead over Carr, the eventual champion, but gave up a takedown and many quick, consecutive turns gave Carr a 16-5 technical fall victory.  Timmons was unable to bounce back, losing his next two matches and finishing in 6th place.  Matt Ramos (46kg/101.4lbs) posted a 5-2 record on the day to finish in 7th place, highlighted by takedown with no time left on the clock to win 16-13 in the blood round, where winners are All-Americans and the losers do not place.

Also competing with us this weekend at the Cadet level were incoming freshman Jimmy Pierandozzi (50kg/110lbs), Jake Lukaszczyk (54kg/119lbs), and Baylor Fernandes (69kg/152lbs).  Both Lukaszczyk and Fernandes were unable to come away with a victory, posting 0-2 records against very tough opponents, while Pierandozzi posted one victory out of three matches.

The sole Lockport alum competing at the University level this weekend was Brad Johnson, who was the starter at 197lbs. for the University of Oklahoma this past season.  Johnson, competing at 97kg/214lbs, posted a 5-2 record, but came up just shy of All-American Status.  Johnson lost to 3x NCAA Qualifier Blaze Cabell in his first bout, before going on a five-match winning streak.  In the blood round, Johnson dropped a technical fall loss to Old Dominion's Kevin Beazley, leaving him one win short of placing.
