Intro/Overview
There are several big events in the wrestling offseason, but they all focus on the Olympic Styles Freestyle and Greco Roman. These two styles are different than the Folkstyle we do during the high school season.
Freestyle would look more similar to what we do in Folkstyle with a greater emphasis on wrestling in the Neutral position and different techniques particularly turns on top. Greco Roman shares the rules of Freestyle with one huge difference. In Greco Roman you are not allowed to grab below your opponents waist or use legs to hook or trip essentially making the style all upper body.
The past two weeks Illinois had their Freestyle and Greco state tournaments. The top two finishers at each weight class qualify for that style's national tournament in Fargo, ND in July. Fargo is the largest tournament in terms of participants in the world. Illinois leads the nation the last decade in finishes at Fargo, it is no small achievement to place in Illinois in these two styles.
USA Wrestling uses age groups the ones we are looking at are Cadet (Born 2000-2001) and Junior (Born 1999-still in HS) This allows some 8th graders to be Cadets and get an early peak at their level of competition against High School age opponents. These tournaments are also done outside of High School team with clubs. The club the majority of Lockport Wrestlers compete for is Colt Wrestling. In this recap I'm going to include all the Colt Wrestling results including wrestlers from a few other schools that compete alongside our Lockport kids so they can be recognized for their accomplishments and hard work also. Additionally, I will include the Lockport kids that wrestle for other area clubs.
