Summary
Friday night and Saturday, Lockport took place in the first ever SWSC Open (you read that correctly, more on it in a bit). With seven individual champions and twelve of fourteen wrestlers placing in the top five at their weight class, Lockport cruised to the team title with 290 points, well past Sandburg, who finished in second place with 217.5 points.
This was the first year for the SWSC Open - kind of. The tournament has existed for years as the Southwest Suburban Conference Tournament, but given the departure of the Joliet Township High Schools from the conference at the end of last year, their inclusion renders this tournament as no longer a "pure" conference tournament. Directors have said they hope to add more quality teams in the upcoming years.
For all intents and purposes, however, this was the individual conference tournament, with two bonus teams. Lockport had a dominating performance, picking up half of the individual titles. Matt Ramos (106), Abdullah Assaf (132) Brandon Ramos (138), Baylor Fernandes (145), Trevell Timmons (160), Nick Dado (170), and Payton Fernandes (182) all came away with individual championships. Anthony Molton (113) was also a finalist, but took 2nd after dropping a close 2-0 decision to Domenic Zaccone of Stagg, in the only match of the tournament for Lockport featuring ranked wrestlers going head to head.
Lockport had strong showings from others as well. James Pierandozzi bounced back from a 6-2 semifinal loss to 2nd ranked Robbie Precin of Andrew to take 3rd at 120. Yousif Salah also finished 3rd at 195, as did Ronald Tucker at 285, who fell in the semifinals to Sandburg's 11th ranked Malik Scates by a 2-1 score - the difference maker being a very questionable fleeing the mat call. Finishing in 4th place for Lockport was Brendan Ramsey (126) who lost 3-1 in OT in a rematch of his quarterfinal bout, which Ramsey had won. John Pacetti (152) also took the mat in the final round, but lost a back and forth 8-7 bout and finished in 6th place.
