SUMMARY
The 2nd ranked Lockport wrestling team took to the mat twice in the past three days and came away with two more wins, pushing the overall team record to 19-0 on the season. On Thursday, Lockport took out #9 Carl Sandburg by a 43-22 score, although the dual felt much closer than the score indicates. On Saturday morning, while Homer Jr. High School was hosting its annual tournament in the Lockport East Field House, Lockport commandeered a corner mat to host Fremd High School in a dual, defeating them 69-6.
RECAPS
Lockport vs. Sandburg
Lockport did not look particularly sharp on Thursday by anyone's standards, but still battled their way to a 43-22 victory over conference rival Carl Sandburg. The dual started off with Sandburg's Sam Wojcik pulling off a 7-4 upset over 7th ranked Anthony Molton of Lockport at 113 pounds, giving Sandburg a boost of confidence they seemed to carry throughout the dual. Jake D'Angelo, filling in at 120, took a 14-1 major decision loss to Pat Nolan as well, putting Lockport down 7-0.
Lockport would battle back, going on a four match win-streak to take a lead which they would never relinquish. Matt Kronsbein took the mat at 126 and picked up a fall in just over a minute, for his first win of the season. #4 Abdullah Assaf picked up a 6-0 win over HM Ben Kirby at 132, while #5 Brandon Ramos added a decision of his own at 138. #3 Baylor Fernandes added a win at 145 by technical fall to give the Porters a 17-7 lead. At 152, Zach Reese dropped a tough one by a 4-2 decision to HM Tim Houston of Sandburg.
Trevell Timmons and Nick Dado each earned forfeits at 160 and 170, respectively, and Payton Fernandes came out at 182 to pick up yet another win by fall on the season. Sandburg would then add two victories of their own, as #1 at 195, Patrick Brucki, defeated HM Chandler Proszek by fall. #8 Cole Bateman added another fall at 220 over Lockport's Dan Stojsavljevic before heading into the final two bouts.
In the closest bout of the dual at 285, Ronald Tucker improved his career record against Sandburg's Malik Scates to 3-0, but it wasn't easy. Tucker's defeated Scates twice last year - by fall in the first period of the dual meet matchup, and by way of a locked hands call on Scates in ultimate tiebreaker at the Individual State Tournament. This time around, it didn't go quite that far, but was still a tight match, as Tucker won 2-1 in OT2. Both wrestlers earned escapes in regulation, and the bout went to overtime tied 1-1. Tucker nearly finished several takedowns but came up just shy, and the bout headed into the OT2 periods. After earning an escape in the first period, Tucker was able to ride Scates out in the second 0:30 period to pick up the 2-1 victory.
The dual closed with #5 Matt Ramos picking up a 17-1 technical fall at 106 pounds, and Lockport came away with the 43-22 victory.
Lockport vs. Fremd
Saturday morning, amidst the sounds of a junior high wrestling tournament taking place on the surrounding seven mats, Lockport hosted Fremd High School. While Fremd was missing five weights, Lockport went 8-1 in the contested matches. Matt Kronsbein (126) and Payton Fernandes (182) each won by pinfall. Abdullah Assaf (132), Baylor Fernandes (145), and James Pierandozzi (120) each won by technical fall. Lockport also picked up three major decisions, coming from Brandon Ramos (138), Zach Reese (152), and Trevell Timmons (160). Dan Stojsavljevic took the loss on the day for Lockport, bumping up from 220 to the 285 pound weight class to take on 5th ranked Zach Nemec, losing by fall in the second period. Lockport also had wins by forfeit from Nick Dado (170), Chandler Proszek (182), Yousif Salah (220), Matt Ramos (106), and Anthony Molton (113). Every single match in this dual was a bonus point victory for the respective teams, but it was a lopsided victory for Lockport, 69-6.
