SUMMARY

The 2nd ranked Lockport Porters wrestling team took the mat Saturday morning to square off against two top-20 teams in Illinois, and came away with two wins, defeating #19 Lyons Township 48-24 and #11 Wheaton North 40-19. With each team having a handful of ranked individuals, there were great matchups all around.  Lockport was still able to pull out decisive victories despite missing four of its "regular" starters due to illness or ACT testing - Brendan Ramsey, Abdullah Assaf, Brandon Ramos, and Ronald Tucker.

In the first dual, Lyons jumped out to an early lead on the backs of wins from three of their top four wrestlers.  Lockport's Angelo Lee, making his varsity debut, was tasked with squaring off against 5th ranked Zach Villareal at 120 pounds, and lost by fall in the second period.  Garrett Golob, wrestling up at 132, took on honorable mention Elias Garcia, and fell by an 11-4 decision, while Dalton Dwyer also bumped up, to 138, where he took a loss by fall to Lyons's 5th ranked Tyler Zeman.

Down 15-0, Lockport rattled off three falls at 145, 152, and 160 to take an 18-15 lead.  At 170, Chandler Proszek took on top-ranked Johnny Mologousis, last year's state runner-up.  Proszek fought tough, but a late takedown in the second period for Mologousis was the major difference maker as he picked up a 3-0 victory.  Proszek was on his legs a few times, but was stalemated out or was stopped due to a potentially dangerous call on multiple occasions.

The Porters won out throughout the rest of the dual, with the exception of 285, where Zac Czyz, stepping up to fill in on short notice Friday and Saturday, took a loss by fall.  At 220, Dan Stojsavljevic won by a nice 7-4 decision, while the matches at 106, 113, and 120 were all bonus-point victories.

In Lockport's second dual, the Porters battled the Wheaton North Falcons, currently ranked 11th in the state by Illinois Matmen.  Dalton Dwyer took on his second ranked opponent of the day, 4th ranked Frankie Indelli, but fell by a 12-4 major decision.  Garrett Golob wrestled all the way up at 138, where he took a 6-0 loss.  The Porters then put out six straight victories.  At 145, Baylor Fernandes, ranked 3rd, picked up his second fall of the day over WN's Riley Lominick, an honorable mention at 138.  At 152, Zach Reese earned his second victory of the day as well, a 7-3 decision to compliment his fall in the first dual.

The highlight bout of the dual was the 160 pound bout, pitting top-ranked Trevell Timmons against second-ranked Devin Donovan.  Neither wrestler could break through the other's defense, and the athletes went into overtime tied at 1-1.  After a scoreless first overtime period, Timmons started the first 30 seconds of the second overtime on bottom, where he earned an escape roughly 15 seconds in.  With no scoring to be had in the remaining time, Donovan chose bottom in the second half.  Timmons was able to ride hard, not allowing Donovan to escape, and Timmons coming away with a 2-1 OT2 victory.

Nick Dado took the mat at 170, earning a fall, and Payton Fernandes came out at 182 picking up a major decision to compliment his fall in 0:13 from earlier in the day.  At 195, Yousif Salah received a forfeit, giving him his second win of the day after a fall against Lyons.  Dan Stojsavljevic battled tough at 220, giving his opponent fits, but ultimately fell by a 7-2 decision.  Zac Czyz took on a very large WN 285 pounder in Nick Yanan, but took a loss by fall.  At 106, Matt Ramos picked up another bonus point win with a fall in the middle of the second.  The bout at 113 featured 8th ranked Anthony Molton taking on 10th ranked Tyler Podnar, a bout in which Molton dominated for a 15-3 victory.  James Pierandozzi came just shy of his second technical fall of the day, scoring a 14-1 major decision over fellow honorable mention Anthony Indelli at 120.

At 126, closing out the dual, Jake D'Angelo had a very entertaining bout against Wheaton North's Jaime Suarez.  D'Angelo, wrestling in only his second varsity competition, gave Suarez, an honorable mention at the weight, some fits with his unorthodox style, but Suarez ultimately came out with a narrow 5-3 victory.  This was not a comfortable win, however - D'Angelo nearly hit a high-flyer from a chest lock as time expired that would have tied it up and send it to overtime, but couldn't quite get the drive to get his hips on top and score the points.
